The Three Amnesties

On the occasion of this 3rd Amnesty, to save humanity, the Master recalled in his Revelations, that the Evolution of the “Đại Đạo” or the Creation includes Three of these Amnesties:

In immemorial times, in prehistoric times or in antiquity (Tam Hoang – Ngũ Đế) He pardoned humanity by granting man:

The first Amnesty – Nhứt Kỳ

He sent for their Redemption Three Teachers Di Đà, Thái Thượng, Phục Hy, representing the three branches Phật, Thánh, Tiên to bring humanity the Words of Truth, and to lead his sons back in the Way of Salvation, the Eternal Life.

Nối Nhơn Hoàng đổi thay Thánh Ý,

Mến hồng trần quên nghĩ Ngọc-Kinh,

Tánh phàm chen lộn vào mình,

Thất tình lục dục biến thành quỉ vương,

Cửa nhà nấu nướng điễm trang,

Trau giồi xác thịt, quên đàng Thiêng Liêng. (210)

Muốn cho trẻ có duyên trở lại,

                             Thầy phải sai ba phái Nhứt Kỳ”;

Di Ðà, Thái Thượng, Phục Hi,

Giáng trần phổ độ duy trì Ðạo Cha.

Thái Thượng sửa tánh phàm tà,

Phục Hy hoạch quái, Di Ðà giác mê. (211)

Nước non bồi bổ tinh thần,

Ngươn Chơn ung đúc bổn căn trau giồi.

Ðạo thông sẽ trở về Trời,

Cùng Cha sum hiệp đời đời an vui. (213)

The Second Amnesty – Nhị Kỳ

Another time, towards the 6th century before our epoch, to save humanity, always bogged down in material mud, He granted the Second Amnesty by revealing to man in the form of the Four Instructors sent to Earth, three of them for Asia, and one for Europe. They embodied the Spirit of Truth. These God Representatives were:

Thích Ca, Lão Tữ, Khổng Tữ, Gia Tô

Listen to the Master’s Words:

Nhìn thấy trẻ dương trần Thầy ngán,

                             Chẳng còn chi rằng đáng con Thầy;

Biết sao cho được giải khuây,

Nhị kỳ phổ độ Thầy rày phaỉ sai.

Bởi thương các trẻ miệt mài,

Trần gian aõ mộng lại hoài Chơn Ngươn. (219)

Hoá bốn phách chẳng sờn lao khổ,

                             Trắng vàng đen phổ độ cã ba;

Ân kia trước có Di Ðà,

Nay cho tái-thế Thích Ca giáng phàm.

Thái Thượng hoá kiếp Lão Ðam,

Truyền Kinh Ðạo Ðức nơi Hàm Cốc Quan. (220)

Kế Châu cho giáng Tố Vương,

Ân cần lập kỹ trần cương dạy dời. (221)

Nơi Tây bộ nhiều lần Ðạo mở,

                             Quỉ vương thường phá vỡ Ðạo nhà;

Phaỉ sai Con Một cuả Cha, (Jesus Christ)

Máu hồng chuộc tội cã và thế gian. (222)

This time again, humanity has lost sight of its Heavenly Origin and departs from the Way of Good and from fraternal Love.

The Third Amnesty – Tam Kỳ

By the Third Amnesty, God the Savior reveals Himself to us, to decree the General Pardon, to show us the Way of Salvation that is within us, to allow us to redeem ourselves before the Last Judgment because He predicts at the same time a profound upheaval, a cataclysm (Ngũ Lôi Hỏa Kiếp).

Con đã dại Thầy yên sao được,

                             Kíp Ngủ Lôi kế dượt gần đây;

Nếu con tránh được buổi nầy,

Mới được chầu Thầy, cực lạc tiêu diêu.

Nếu con ma quỉ tinh yêu,

Ngủ Lôi hoã kiếp diệt tiêu linh hồn. (226)

Muốn cho con được tròn tỉnh ngộ,

                             Ðệ Tam Kỳ Phổ Ðộ phải ban;

Xét coi cả coỉ Dinh Hoàng,

Có Châu Nam Thiệm Hồng Bàng khá khen,

Một lòng Ðạo Ðức tập rèn,

Ít mê vật chất đê hèn như đâu. (227)

Tuy chưa Rõ nhiệm mầu Ðạo Ðức,

                             Song có lòng kỉnh Phật thờ Trời;

Lịnh sai Tiên Thánh các nơi,

Giúp người lầm lạc phục hồi bổn sơ.

                                      Phổ-thông dụng báu huyền cơ,

Khải thông Ðại Ðạo trên bờ Nam Bang. (228)

Thầy thương xót một bầy con dại,

                             Kiếp “ngủ lôi” hiện tại đương giàng;

Thầy thương, Thầy dạy, Thầy than,

Mong cho con chớ ngổ ngang lời Thầy.

Ví bằng kiếp số đến ngày,

Ăn-năn đã muộn kêu Thầy uổng công. (233)

The unchangeable Justice of God would no longer tolerate any of his creatures to ignore Him and work against His Laws of Love, Perfection, Creation, and Life.

Eternal Evolution requires the Elimination of unclean elements, a Renewal: It is now the end of one Cycle, before the advent of another one, better. It will be a new Epoch that is brewing and coming.

The Establishment of this 3rd Amnesty includes three stages or preparatory periods, the purpose of which is to select the chosen ones and to test the conscripts.

At Initiation, the Divine Teaching is revealed during each Period, in a very detailed, very wise and perfect way as all that comes from the Master. It is progressive to gradually bring up the Elected little by little according to their spiritual perfection, to the different existence planes of the Inner Life and the Universal Life.

The counsels, the strict reprimands, the tests like the encouragements and rewards, have been so judiciously distributed by the Auguste Master.

The Three Preparatory Periods of the Third Amnesty

The First Preparatory Period or

Đệ Nhứt Tiểu Thời Kỳ

Under the name: « Đại Đạo Tam Kỳ Phổ Độ »

With for symbol: « the Divine Eye » (The Eye represented Intelligence or the Divine Spirit)

Holy Site: at Tây Ninh, from 1926 to 1929

Organization:

Temporal leaders      Đức Giáo Tông     Lê văn Trung and Thượng Trung Nhựt

Représentatives of the Master:

Spiritual leaders         Đức Hộ Pháp       Phạm Công Tắc and Phạm Công Diêu

and the mediums.

Temporal Hierarchy    Đốc Phủ              Nguyễn văn Ca, Lê văn Trang

Đốc Phủ              Nguyễn Ngọc Tương, Nguyễn Ngọc Thơ

Trần Đạo Quang, Nguyễn Ngọc Lịch,

                                                                     Đoàn văn Bản

The Master’s hand performed miracles mysteriously but with prudence, balance and dexterity, in the calm manifested and unmanifested. The Creation, master of Time and Space is so perfect!

« Đạo là phẳng lặng trang bằng,

Dường như gió tạnh Trời trăng đêm rầm ! »

He had his plan, his design that no man can reveal before the hour by excess of zeal or by curiosity, on penalty of failure or punishment. (Thiên Cơ bất khả lậu)

“Tới đâu Thầy sẻ chỉ tới đó” as He said.

He demanded from us only sincere repentance, total submission, and absolute faith to guide and instruct us in the Way of Salvation, in our Spiritual Education. So from the first revealed word, He makes us recognize our fundamental error for having ignored our spiritual source, getting deeply entangled in matter, in the thick ignorance of absolute reality.

« Con đà lạc Tổ, xiêu Tông,

Ðem đường dẫn lối nhờ trông có Thầy.

Thầy ôi! con dại vô ngần,

Cầu xin Lượng Cả khoan hoằng bao dung. »

And then :

« Con đà sái bước lạc đàn,

Muôn ngàn tội lỗi chứa chang dẫy đầy.

Mẹ thương, xin Mẹ làm khuây,

Tha cho con dại thơ ngây lỗi lầm. »

Under this essential condition of submissive and grateful sons, we would make ourselves worthy of the infinite Grace and Mercy of the Master. Sadly, our first brothers did not know it, and were not admitted to the Good School!

In each period of our spriritual initiation therefore corresponds: a priestly body, a symbol, a teaching program and a different temporal status peculiar to it.

1-  The Emblem: The Symbolic Eye in the Azure was to represent the Spirit of God who knows All and sees All, the Divine Intelligence that watches over all Creation Visible and Invisible; Just re-read the words of Confucius:

« Thiên vỏng khôi khôi, sơ nhi bất lậu ».

The Master repeats it in the current language of the people:

« Đời thường nói Trời cao có mắt,

     Sách thường biên Thái  NHứt vô hình ;

Minh mông đồ sộ rộng thinh,

Mà soi xét đủ tình hình thế gian.”

It is the same Eye, the same Intelligence, and the Spirit of God who looked at Cain in his deep black grave where he wanted to hide his sin and evade Justice of the Eternal.

2-  As Teaching during this Period, the Master reminded men of the Faith of God, of the Eternal Existence of the Soul.

To put themselves on the Way of Deliverance, they had only to follow the Words of the Three Teachers who emanated from Him, so well known to all: Thích Ca, Lão Tử, Khổng Tử, who’s Doctrines were distorted with the time and seemed to be different and independent. In spirit, they complete each other and lead us to the same goal, to the perfection of our Divine, our Soul, to guide our Spiritual Life to the world of Reality.

The program therefore included the perfection of the human personality, according to the Confucian morality, and the cleansing our heart per elementary principles of Buddhism Purification:

Tam Cang, Ngũ Thường,

Nhơn, Nghĩa, Lễ, Trí, Tín.

Tam Qui, Ngũ Giái,

Từ Bi, Bác Ái, Công Bình.

Faith in God and His Saints, in the survival of the Soul, in Divine Justice and hence, sincere Repentance, Love of others, Forgiveness of offenses, Humanity and Charity; Humility!

3-  Dignitaries, ranks, costumes, offices and regulations were prescribed, according to the three branches or Saint Patronnages:

Phái Phật      Thích Ca       (Bouddhisme)         couleur jaune

Phái Tiên      Lão Tử         (Taoisme)               couleur bleu

Phái Thánh   Khổng Tử     (Confucianisme)      couleur rouge

The brethren, barely awakened to the Spiritual Life, understood nothing of the Master’s Miracle, and full of enthusiasm, acted and let themselves be carried away by their intellect, attached themselves much more to the Tempestuous Temporal than to the Spiritual Perfection: Also did they sin before having been to the School of Truth.

Regretably, they were massively eliminated in the first sorting of the Selection.

4-  Mediumship: It should be noted, as Mr. Dong Ha of Nam Phong wrote, that in ordinary times, even taking the most careful precautions in the choice of the environment and the organizers, with sincere faith, ardent and pure, it was difficult to obtain, in a session of spiritism, the coming of a good Spirit, a superior Spirit, and the result was often negative or uninteresting.

By order and by the Grace of the Master, on the occasion of the 3rd Amistie, and only in the First Period, mediums hastily trained, obtained easily and at will, the eager and voluntary assistance of the various Spirits, in charge of propaganda, to recall Humanity back to Faith, to awakening of the Spiritual Life, to the deliverance of the Soul.

The Master, to save us, preached by example, by deigning to leave His Augustus Throne, and coming from high and far to enlighten us with His Light, to bring us His Grace, His Mercy, even to the earthly world, in this humble land of Annam, calling us the blessed race, His beloved sons!

« Thân Thân giá hạnh Nam Thiên,

Trước xem Tam Giái, cháu Tiên, con Rồng.

Đã đòi kiếp dày công nhọc sức,

Dạy chúng sanh kỉnh Phật thờ Trời,

Thương thay cũng tại số người,

Ngạo lời Thánh Huấn, kĩnh lời Quĩ Vương.

Lòng chẳng kể cang thường là Đạo,

Dạ hằng lo hung bạo làm đầu,

Thấy vầy Thầy phải nghĩ sâu

Tam Kỳ Phổ Độ Nam Châu phe nầy! ”

What an infinite Grace! What a badge of honor! What a Noble and Paternal Mercy!

Complete submission, sincere faith and recognition are necessary to deserve, to welcome and to follow the Divine Savior, who comes in Person!

However the attitude of the leaders of Tây Ninh was the cause of the disappearance of the Mysterious Divine Ray, and the birth of dissent. They bifurcated from the Right Path of Virtue and Purity, carried away by their inferior nature!

Their misdeeds were clearly stigmatized in the collection: “Chánh Tà Yếu Lý”, preceded by the Pure Principles Confucian Moral, collected in the first collection “Tu Chơn Thiệp Quyết”. They denied, naturally both.

Nothing, however, is as luminous, pure and perfect as these two bedsides Bible of the Truly Religious!

Bỏ điều tà vạy đưng canh cải Trời;

Cải Trời thì bị Luật Trời,

Trời nào có dạy cướp ngôi tranh quyền!

Tam Kỳ ân xá các nơi

Hể biết nghe lời thì đặng qui nguyên.”

Amnesty is general, for the whole of humanity; we are only the first initiates, soldiers of the crusade, and servants of the Sacred Cause, to prepare the way, the coming and the reign of the Divine Master. Be submissive, my Brothers, have Faith in God the Father and you will be saved!

After the 1st Preparatory Stage at Tây Ninh, the mediumship was virtually reduced to disappearing, and, defeated, messages obtained in the following period by the 1st team, or by its dissidents, came from the malicious spirits; they were of a pietre mediocrity, like their temporal, empirical and childish organizations! Poor brothers!

Dissidences: As a result of the differences in view and the unsuccessful protest of Đốc Phủ Ca group on the actions of the Tây Ninh leaders, dissidences occur:

Mr Đốc Phủ Ca will found the Center of Mỹ Tho, which formed by merger with the groups of Rạch Giá, Long Xuyên and Sa Đéc. Mỹ Tho was becoming the Holy See in the 2nd Period.

Mr Trang and MrTương also split out from Tây Ninh, to found the Bến Tre Center.

Mr Đoàn văn Bản will set up the Cầu Kho Center, after working for a while with Mr Đốc Phủ Ca.

The Second Preparatory Period or

Đệ Nhị Tiểu Thời Kỳ

Under the name: « Ngọc Hoàng Đại Đế Hội Giáo » (Religious Association for the Worship of God and His Teaching)

With for symbol: « the Eye in the Heart », in other words the Spirit of God or the Divine Self in Man.

Holy Site: at Mỹ Tho (Trung Ương Thánh Tòa) from 1930 to 1938

                                                                                                        Phan văn Tài

After the 1st Stage of the Preliminary Period, after a severe selection which left large waste, there was a profound change: to the happy ones, the Master will spread His Infinite Grace revealing to them the Eternal Truth or Chơn Lý.

For this Auguste Solemnity, He makes detailed arrangements for the organization of the Holy Site, with appointment of the Spiritual Leader, the Mediums, the Body of the Dignitaries of the Temporal, as well as the Sacred Laws, necessary for Discipline, in any institution.

1.   First the Holy Site was baptized: « Trung Ương Thánh Tòa »

It must have double meaning that it was the Sacred Central Seat, manifested in matter where God Supreme comes to Reveal the Truth, because it is chosen in the Center of Cochinchina for the convenience of all the faithful of the country.

And in the Spiritual sense: this denomination represented in Symbol the Holy Center of our being, where each of us had to strive to find his Divine Self, the Spirit of Master incarnate, and our Divine Soul. The Holy Site was symbolic as was the Sacred Symbol: the Eye in the Heart, which was enthroned in the middle of the Temple. Both showed us the goal to be attained: “To find or to realize one’s Divine Self,” to embody the emblem in us, to bring forth the Divine Light.

2.   The fortuitous death of a modest believer with pure Heart and proven Faith, Her Beatification, then her Solemn Investiture in the Heavenly Court of the Sovereign Master, was followed shortly after by the no- less olemn appointment of the Spiritual Leader and his mediums.

Decree of the Eternal God (4th of the 6th month, 1930):

Cao Kiết như Lư Bồng

Đài đồng Bạch Ngọc Kinh

Sắc phong tuyên giáo hóa

Tứ linh giác Tây Đông.

Nguyễn Kỳ Phùng lại thọ phong.

“ Hai lần, Thầy triệu mới ưng tùng,

Thiên chức, Thầy ban tợ mặt phong,

Đôi ngã Long, Kiên tua vững tải,

Nguyễn Thiên Sư chức hứa Kỳ Phùng.”

Then the designation of the two mediums followed: they happened to be the two sons of the Teacher’s 1st Elect, Saint Thể Liêng Tiên Nữ:

“Ma đảnh cho hai tiểu đạo đồng,

Chơn Tâm, Tường Khánh Pháp Danh phong,

Truyền trao nắm giử giây liên lạc,

Điểm hóa song bằng mực Chí Công,

Hoa nở gió đưa hương bát ngát,

Nguồn sâu nước chảy giọt xanh trong.

Tam Kỳ mừng thấy tay rường cột,

Chống vững Trời cao cội bá tòng”

The Pure Word of Truth was to come out of these two chosen ones! Such a wise choice, a Solemn Proclamation as well as the Master’s Infinite Grace, were to confer on the elect the Prestige and the Mysterious and Pure Light of His Spirit of Truth. In fact, the Spiritual Leader was the Spirit in the Predestined Man, for he already had a solid foundation of instruction which made him an expert in Confucianism, Taoism, and Buddhism, which he relentlessly explained. He was illuminated by the Spirit of Truth and received, with his Sacred Mission, the heavy burden of organizing the Holy Site and transmitting the Master’s Teaching. The Light shone on us and his Word was inexhaustible.

He was to bring us to a Higher Stage or Higher Plan of our Spiritual Evolution, in our inner life, as in the Higher Plan of the Universe.

« Đến Thời Kỳ nầy, Thầy không dùng Điển Hạ Thiên nữa ; Thầy cậy Phùng, là Người có Điển Trung Thiên để giúp Thầy mà truyền dạy mối Chơn Lý. »

The two mediums themselves, touched by the Master’s Grace, had only primary and elementary education, which was a guarantee of integrity for the messages they receive, which are of a noble elevation and a miraculous purity.

The third Elect was the Dignitary responsible for the Part of the Teaching, that is to say, to decipher, to study and to spread the Sacred Scripture; it was Mr. Nguyễn văn Kiên, in Religion: “Ngoc Kiên Tinh or Tinh Quân”.

« Nầy, Châu-Bút Thầy phê một đoạn,

                             Ngọc Kiên Tinh trước án nghe phân;

Tân An trọn địa phải cần,

Khắp miền Vàm Cỏ, trọn phần Đồng Nai.

Giao con gánh nặng đường dài,

Đừng lòng than thở mà hoài công phu. (194)

Thầy ung đúc mấy thu con xét,

                             Chơn-Lý nầy định quyết phần con;

                                      Lý sanh Ðạo-Thể tròn vuôn,

Khí sanh Ðạo-Tướng muôn muôn trùng trùng,

Lý sanh Khí hoá vô cùng,

Mới thành Ðạo Dụng giúp công ơn Thầy. (195)

Con gánh lúc thời kỳ Ðạo Dụng,

                             Phải đem mình giải mộng chúng sanh;

Giải tiêu nhơn dục vọng tình,

Lóng xong ngọn suối giọt xanh trong ngần. (198) »

He is the One who, after the Spiritual Leader, will dedicate himself fully to his Noble Task, with a Pure Heart, a Fiery Faith, a tenacious Will and who through assiduous, stubborn work has finally reached The Pure Light, The Truth.

But the Divine Master wanted to do better, with perfection. He designated the Four Blessed, who were under the Faith of a Solemn Oath, to realize the Sacred Union, of the Spritual and of the Temporal, in order to receive, perpetuate, and spread the Divine Work, The Truth. They owed by their perfect and indissoluble mission, to personify The Master.

It was the Body of Tứ Bửu

(The Four Sacred Elements of the Master)

Bữu Ngươn            Nguyễn Hữu Phùng           Spiritual Leader

Bữu Thiên              Nguyễn văn Ca                 Temporal Leader

Bữu Tinh                Nguyễn văn Kiên              Teaching Officer

Bữu Sơn                 Phan văn Nhơn                 Spiritual Practice

Officer

These Four Sacred Elements forming the “Spiritual in the Temporal” Unit. The Master has defined them allegorically as following

The first, Bữu Ngươn represented the Pen,

The second, Bữu Sơn, the Penholder,

The third, Bữu Tinh, the red Ink, and

The fourth, Bữu Thiên, the Sheet of Paper

The Four Elements united, represented The Spirit of the Master, The Truth, The Sacred Scripture Revealed.

With such characters, such a careful organization, so carefully selected, The Master confided The Eternal Truth.

3.   It should be added: The Sacred College of the Apprentices, Mediums (Ban Đồng Tử) and the Officiant Corps (Ban Hiệp Thiên Đài) followed by the Corps of the Faithful (Ban Cữu Trùng Đài) with its hierarchy, dignities, ranks and costumes, still proceeding Thái, Thượng, Ngọc trios Branches retouched and redeveloped.

The teaching of Chơn Lý or the Eternal Truth has been given in all its Sublimité.

“Laws of Creation, Source of Life, the Eternal;

Man and His Cosmos, Nature of Man Explained, Soul Life. “

From the rites point of view, all prayers were given in full. The words of the Gospel were preached, explained in common courses; additional courses were published in a Đuốc Chơn Lý or the Torch of Truth Review (from 1 to 30 inclusive).

Everything was worthy of The Master’s Sacred Work, from the Dignitaries and the faithful with their sincere and ardent Faith to the mediums, who received messages in impeccable form, perfect purity, radiant with truth.

4.   The Symbol was perfect, and it was necessary to realize each within Self.

The Eye in the Heart meant Divine Self in Man.

The Heart is human Love.

The Eye is the Divine, or Spirit of God, Pure Reason (Lý) incarnated in Man, that all have to find (Soul) or (Thiên Tánh).

But what prodigious hand could translate all this into a perfect image!

“Reason is the treasure of the Spirit,

Love is the Perfume of the Heart. “

“Reason and Love” perfectly united, man will reach the perfection where being Human means Harmony.

Regretably, a Teaching so sublime, Truth so resplendent, the Word so pure, a Symbol so high, were hardly understood by a great number of the faithfuls who did not see in the Spiritual Leader a superman, but an Extraordinary Being: They would not submit to his authority, they thought they could find Truth apart from him, discussing the worthiness of mediumship, as if they have such freedom while in the the first Stage.

In short, these dissidences gave birth to many groups. At the Holy Site of Mỹ Tho itself, the revealed Teaching was not understood, much less asssimilated despite the warnings:

« Tỉnh giấc chiêm bao ớ trẻ bầy !

Đừng tìm non núi, hoặc cung mây,

Cao Đài vốn ở lòng con đó,

Bỏ tánh tham si sẻ gặp Thầy.

Gặp Thầy cùng chẳng tại nơi lòng,

Bả lợi mồi danh lóng sạch trong,

Thấu Rõ thế gian muôn tượng đó,

Nó đều không có cũng không không ! »

Many did not understand the Symbol, or did not want to submit to the fifteen Commandments (15 Khoản Qui Điều) and twenty-one Moral Principles (21 Khoản Kỷ Luật), the basis of the Teaching, for their Spritual Evolution.

The Sublime Teaching was considered too difficult, unapproachable, even for the Dignitaries. Indeed one would have to make total abstraction of one’s personality with all one’s knowledge, and strive to discover in oneself the Laws of Nature, if one ardently wanted to reach Truth, Divinity, mysteriously hidden in Man.

The Chief of the Oratory, Mr. Đóc Phủ Ca, one of the members of the Sacred Union, Bữu Thiên, finally abandoned the Holy Scriptures, having seen nothing coming, despite its application to the Study. Discords occurred between the Spiritual and the Temporal, which forced the Spiritual Leader to withdraw with a group of his followers.

This upheaval was to be the subject of a great trial and a very severe selection, as in the preceding period.

The Master did not fail to warn them:

« An Thiên Hội một bài dạy rõ,

                             Ai xuôi con họa hổ bất thành;

Tại con ham muốn phù danh,

Bạn hiền đâu khứng đem mình giúp con.

Khuyên rày bỏ dạ cầu cao,

Kìa cơ chuyển Đạo, định trao đã gần. (411)

Con thử xét từng mây mấy lớp,

                             Thì con tường trường hợp Ta Người;

Ta Người đều Một với Trời,

Ta Người đâu có mến đời mẫn mê.

Ta Người mau thoát kiếp về,

Từng mây mấy lớp đều quê hương nhà. » (426)

It was necessary to dematerialize, live an think in Spirit, to realize the Divine or the Human, the Spirit in the Man.

It was not thought that the Sipiritual Chief, designated by the Master’s Decree, and the subject of the Sacred Oath of Union and the Sacred Laws, was irreplaceable, without His Formal Order; the same was true of the mediums.

« Bốn người Minh Thệ, Năm vị Thiên Sư,

Một tiếng Đại Từ, Trăm bài Thánh Huấn,

Đuốc Chơn Lý ngày ngày đắc thắng ;

Năm Thiên Sư lòng chớ rã đôi,

Cảnh Trung Ương bửa bửa vung bồi ;

Hai Chưởng Quản chí mau hiệp một.

(The Confident Union of the two Chiefs: Spiritual and Temporal)

Rõ đặng câu « Thiên Mạng Vi Tôn »;

Tuân thì đặng, Nghe theo thì ắc đặng ;

Tuân nghe phải xui theo cơ vận chuyển ;

Đừng ỷ tài gà phụng mà lầm ;

Đợi Thiên ý chọn người hai mươi bốn ;

Điển ma lộn, Điển Trời đâu có lộn ! »

Brief, after the departure of the Spiritual Leader in late 1937, Mr. Ca appointed another, and what value! It was a certain M.Được who ordered, with messages of an inconceivable banality (see Đuốc Chơn Lý No. 32) sanctions at arm’s length, and the change of motto of the Holy See which becomes:

Tòa Thánh Định Tường

This was the name of the former province of lower Cochinchina, under King Tự Đức. The Symbol was changed from a Blood Red to a Black Center, which becomes an absurdity. The Teaching is brought back to the land of domestic morality.

Mỹ Tho, Tây Ninh and the other Centers, returned to the dark night, in the thick shadow of ignorance!

Note: Already at this stage, the 2 mediums specially designated by the Master no longer used, as elsewhere, the beaker, vulgar instrument still in use by a couple of mediums. Even the invocation cantatas of the Spirits were no longer recited in length as in the 1st Period.

Each of the chosen mediums, touched by Grace, acted alone after contemplation, using a wooden quill; they are gifted with a purer, more powerful Essence to emerge from the manifested world, to reach the Higher Plane of the Universe, where the Master and the Higher Spirits reside. (Điển Trung Thiên)

The sessions were very rare; they acted only on the orders of the Above or the Spiritual Leader.

Study of Truth within Self from which the Eternal Truth comes out

It was first the Reconstruction of the Sacred Body of Tứ Bữu (The Four Blessed) whose defection of Bữu Thiên (Đốc Phủ Ca) left an empty place, namely:

Bữu Nguơn           Hổn Nguơn Thiên Sư         Nguyễn Hữu Phùng

Bữu Tinh                Tây Sư Tinh Quân                Nguyễn văn Kiên

Bữu Sơn                 Nam Sư Thanh Sơn             Phan văn Nhơn

Bữu Vi                    Đông Sư Vi Hộ                 Nguyễn văn Phấn

The first three retain their role: 1st Spiritual Leader, 2nd Teaching Officer, 3rd Practice Purification. Only the 4th replaces Bữu Thiên as Head of the Temple and Temporal.

Spiritual Collaborators                                   Phan văn Tài in Mỹ Tho

Hồ văn Tú in Tân An

Only one medium assigned                          Nguơn Tinh

And helpers from the Sacred College         Ban Pháp Sư

                                                                           Ban Đồng Tử

A Corps of Officiants                                      Ban Cao Thiên Đài

A Corps of the Faithful                                   Ban Tập Sự Cao Thiên Đài

The Spiritual Leader continues to preach, to instruct, to consolidate the basis of the Teaching of the Truth.

The School of Truth was opened, and the construction of the Holy Site ordered in 1940, at Tan An City.

Giảng Đàn Chơn Lý của Đức Chí Tôn

Nhà Chung của Chung Vô Hình cho Thể Vô Hình của Đạo.

We move resolutely into Formless Life (The Vô Vi).

The Spiritual Leader was recalled to God on July 13, 1940, in Long Xuyên. Yet he continues to exercise his functions in the Spirit. His Divine Mission continues. While he was the Man in spirit, when he was with a human body, in this sensible world, he is now the Spirit of Man, in the subtle world of Reality, and this is quite natural.

In a solemn sitting dated July 1936, one year before the break between the Spiritual and the Temporal, the Master gave a meticulous warning to the Four Blessed, exhorting them to the Sacred Union and to the respect of the Laws.

«  Mừng cho trẻ có tâm tìm Ðạo,

                             Thì những lời dạy bảo phải tuân;

Mấy muôn ngàn kiếp một lần,

Mấy muôn ngàn kiếp được gần mặt Ta. (432)

Các con muốn Thiêng-liêng vững chặt,

                             Thì phải lo kiên Luật chí-công;

Chọn con đều giống rặt ròng,

Chín mười sao giống chẳng đồng giá cân? (433)

Luật Trời đã đặt ra Kỷ Luật,

                             Cho các con biết mực tu hành;

Luật Trời đã dạy đinh ninh,

Con ôi giữ Luật sửa mình sớm khuya. (434)

Ðã nhìn con thiệt của Trời,

Trời kia là Luật con ôi phải nhìn. (435) »

In Fatality, Bữu Thiên, the Chief of the Temporal was to succumb without recourse, bringing with him the mass of the faithful who trust him.

So, complete change of scenery:

The Spiritual Leader had fulfilled his mission at the 2nd Stage. He immediately passed to Vô Vi and continued to guide us from there:

Assuming the task alone, he sent us the Word and the instructions from his temporary Site in Long Xuyen, baptized:

Nhà Chung của Chung cho Hồn của Đạo

Vô Vi Hiệp Thiên Đài, or Vô Vi Đài

And us, le Temporal, kept our:

Tòa Thánh Trung Ương Vô Hình

(our Ngọc Kinh or The Holy Center of our Being)

The Teaching focussed on giving us what could not be obtained from Mỹ Tho, namely the Elimination of the “I”, of our lower nature, with its limited knowledge, its Intellect, to bring Purity, Serenity proper to the magnificence of the Divine Glow. This was the key which was not easy to attain!

In this Goal, The Leader gives us a Spiritual Purification Collection:

« Sám Hối Thanh Tịnh Kinh”

(Confession of the human Self) on the thesis

Thể phách tinh anh thật báu Trời,

Liêng cung ung đúc tượng đôi đôi,

Tiên Thiên Khí Hóa trong trong trắng,

Nữ vị nam ban gốc một ngôi!

This Diamond Collection saves us; with 81 quadrants of luminous verse, which we recite daily, and which we study carefully. It would be necessary to quote it entirely, this breviary, this mirror in which the soul, the Divine Self examines itself, searches, scans to get rid of all that binds it to the visible world of the senses. Let’s quote some passages:

« Thầy Chúa-Tể mấy từng cao ngự,

Thầy nào sanh đứa dữ như con,

Thầy sanh Thầy phú đủ hồn,

Thầy sanh Thầy dạy chẳng còn sót chi. (4)

Con dại dột bị ba quỉ giục,

Nên mắc vòng Tham Độc hại mòn,

Hại con đến mất Linh Hồn,

Hại con Tham Muốn chẳng còn sót chi. (8)

Lòng tập nhiễm theo đời vật chất,

Nên hóa ra tâm thuật phàm phu.

Tưởng khôn mà thấy càng ngu,

Có ngu mới thấm đứa mù quến ma. (28)

Ngu cho đến Cái Ta không biết,

Nhìn nó rằng cái Thiệt của mình.

Mê lo cho nó trường sanh,

Tham cầu cho nó cao danh lớn quyền. (29)

Thầy hỡi Thầy thơ ngây con trẻ,

Vì luân hồi xiết kể ngàn muôn. »(50)

Finally, after a thorough examination of his false Self, man decides to leave these attachments to the material world. He takes his firm resolution, his true sincerity to reach the Renewal and makes his Vows:

« Con chí nguyện sửa lòng Thanh Tịnh,

Quyết về đường Chơn Chánh ban sơ »

« Đầu cúi lạy bày lời Sám Hối,

Xét con rồi con hỏi lấy con.

Nguyền rằng biển cạn non mòn,

Chẳng còn đeo đuổi theo khuôn luân hồi. »

He thus promises himself, from his ambience of the world of the senses that creates ambitions and passions, all this veil of ignorance that distances him from the Real, to pass into the Serenity to listen to the voice of the Divine Wakefulness.

Following the example of the Chief, we all had to strive for the Formless Life, The Vô Vi, whose modified motto is designed as follows:

Nhứt Tâm qui hướng Vô Vi Chưởng Giáo Sư Phụ Đại Thiên Tôn,

Nhứt Tâm qui hướng Vô Hình Chủ Tể Pháp Luật Qui Điều,

Nhứt Tâm qui hướng Vô Kiệt Chí Tôn Cao Thiên Đại Đế.

Lạy Thầy Vô Kiệt Cao Thiên,

Hóa Sanh vạn vật Mối Giềng Người Ta.

(Fiery Vows from the Pure Heart to the Divine Direction)

It was necessary basically to make the essential distinction between:

a.    The Intelligence of the Real, hidden, mysterious, innate (Trí Lương Tri, Thiên Tánh), the Divine in Man or his Soul, emanating from the Eternal Spirit, with which he came into the world. This Intelligence of the Real is the Divine Spirit in Man or Lý, Pure Reason of Divine Source.

b.    Intlligence of the sensible, perceptible, acquired world, (Trí Tri) (Cái Biết sau khi Người có xác thân rồi mới biết). This intelligence of the world is the human mind or intellect created for its convenience and security, by the separate life of the individual.

So, to awaken the Eternal in oneself, and to live the Real Life, is to think, feel and act universally. It is to reach the Totality of Being; it is to recognize the Unity of Life. The Unique Way is in us, it is the path of Deliverance, the Way of the Heart; in Man it is the Eternal Truth.

« Tu hành là học làm Trời,

Phải nào kiếp kiếp làm người thế gian. »

« Người, Trời Một Thể Một Ngôi »

(The Spirit of Man and the Spirit of God are of the same Essence.)

In the Gospel according to John 3:5-8, Jesus said:

“Truly, truly, I say to you, if a man is not born of Water and Spirit (chính là Lý và Khí đó), he can not enter the Kingdom of God. What is born of Flesh is Flesh, and what is born of the Spirit is Spirit.”

In short, the Holy Site was once edified and baptized, against the denominations of Tòa Thánh Tây Ninh or Định Tường:

« Nhà Chung của Chung Vô Hình cho Thể Vô Hình của Đạo »

Predicted in a Master verse:

« Khôn lanh sao bẳng thiệt thà,

Chung hiệp một nhà cứu sống thế gian.

Thế gian một cửa Nhà Chung,

Ai nở chia ra đứa một vùng!”

And:                                     “Dưới Trời Đất đồng bào cả thảy!”

Everything is creature of God, the manifested world created by the Eternal Spirit. The Holy See realizes in principle a model of Perfect Spiritual World (Thế Giái Chơn Nhơn) or Terrestrial Paradise, where all would live a Real Life, under the aegis of the Eternal, symbolic reproduction of the Bạch Ngọc Kinh, Real Paradise which will welcome us one day.

The dignitaries, ranks, offices of the temporal were profoundly modified: the three Branches Phật, Thánh, Tiên were merged into one; we were now followers of the Master, the Pure Caodaists, the Good Selected Seed, the True Men-Spirits. There are only two classes left:

Ban Cao Thiên Đài and Tập Sự Cao Thiên Đài

Those two groups are subdivided each into six secondary grades according to our efforts and our progessive Spiritual Evolution.

The offices, the altar are organized for a strictly spiritual purpose, without form. On the altar: a simple vase of flowers and a light. No other offering than our Pure Soul, in daily confessions and prayers.

In 1942, to acknowledge our real progress, the Master admitted us all into the Formless Life, and gave us a splendid symbolic costume. We were supposed to be from now on Men in Spirit, detached from the visible world, and fictitiously from our material envelope. Also, the costume covers us completely, to conceal it and is of a bright red-orange color, to show that the Divine Light realizes from the interior, shines and illuminates us in full. Thus we realize within us, the Symbol: the Eye in the Heart, or the Divine in Man.

It is for this reason that the Symbol was suppressed, first by order from above, and then replaced by a luminous Source, projecting above the altar of the Temple:

The Divine Light, Source of Real Life, the Lighthouse of Eternity, is radiating on the world.

We are thus set and guided in the infinite path of Perfection. We believe, live and evolve in the Eternal. The Teaching continues, therefore, by Sermons on Sacred Scripture, made by Đức Đốc Tràng Vô Hình Giảng Đàn Chơn Lý Vô Hình của Đức Chí Tôn; in person Bữu Tinh or Tinh Quân, and by messages from the Higher Spirits, guides, of which we will find some examples in extenso, at the end of this Study.

Mediumship

“Caodaism” is not Spiritism; as the early followers wrongly believed. Not everyone is qualified to reach the Supreme Being, and receive from Him the Light of Salvation, the Truth.

At the first Stage it took His Infinite Grace and His Orders for the spirits to prepare the atmosphere for His coming, His miracles. At the 2nd Stage, He put an end to this practice by designating the Spiritual Leader and his appointed mediums, who were to bring His Word and The Eternal Truth.

At the end of this Stage (Trung Thiên) these two messengers ceased their duties, mysteriously pulled out, and another was announced, which was only designated in 1941, at the Cao Thien Stadium, after the departure of the Chief towards the afterlife.

In short, there are degrees and laws in these mediums prescribed by the Master, who deigned Himself descended from His August throne to reach us and reveal Himself.

« Thầy vì thương chư đệ tử, nên phế Ngọc Kinh, xuống Ngôi Bổn Giác đặng là Linh Hồn cho chư đệ tử, lẻ gì chư đệ tử phải tuân Lịnh Hiệp Thiên Đài mới phải… »

« Ngọc Kinh định mở Đạo nhà Nam,

Hoàng Điện đành buông, để giáng phàm,

Thượng trí khá mau ra giúp sức,

Đế Vương nào ví Đạo Kỳ Tam »

Spiritism has revealed the invisible world, but can not reach the Upper Divine Region, that is, the Real World.

In man, the Divine Self alone can be touched by Pure Caodaism because we have the certainty that the Cao Đài or Cao Việt Thiên Đài is the Supra Divine Region of the Soul, therefore the Abode of our True Soul, our Divine Self, the Christ in us, very deeply hidden (Lý, ở chỗ Sâu Nguồn là nơi: Trung Tâm Điểm)

The Real World exists; therefore there is a Living Reality in us; that one calls God, or the Truth (Lý, Chơn Lý).

There must be a Real World (Vô Vi Cảnh Giái) without which there is no Invisible World (Thế Giái Vô Hình). Without the Invisible World or the unmanifested Universe, there can be no Visible World or Manifested Universe (Thế Giái Hữu Hình, Hạ Giái).

Until now, study made by earthly Humanity does not go beyond the invisible world, totally ignoring the Real World. It is the Cao Đài Đại Đạo who revealed it.

At the 3rd Stage, we have successively attained these Three Worlds within ourselves through the practice of Spiritual Purification and Concentration. The first successful one is precisely the Perfect Medium who takes the title Nguơn Tinh, Người Rước Điển and who realizes in him a State of Permanent Illumination to be in constant contact with the Higher Spirits, in order to receive the Teaching or the Orders. He is the Chosen One, announced at the 2nd Stage, 8 years ago:

« Đừng ỷ tài, gà phụng mà lầm,

Đợi Thiên Ý chọn người hai mươi bốn ; »

Like the Chief in his place, he incarnates the Divine Pure Spirit; his badge is a Lotus Bonnet (Hồng Hoa) of 24 petals, as an allegory, like the rest of the Great Dignitaries. Others are on the verge of attaining this degree of enlightenment and serve him as helpers (Đồng Tử Vô Vi). Their Holy Purified Spiritual Center realizes the receiver and transmiter to the Universal Essence Radio, a State of True Intuition, comparable to the Ecstasy of John of Arc, perceiving the Voice of God in herself.

Here, moreover, is the explanation given by The Master, himself:

« Thầy tuy sắm cái lò Tạo-hóa,

                             Tạo Hóa Công nơi dạ các con;

Khoe khoan khéo vụng, dại, khôn,

Sắt, gan, đồng, thép, yếu dòn bởi đâu?

Ðừng ai mặc áo khỏi đầu,

Biết đâu rún biển cạn sâu mà dò! » (407)

So there were 3 Stages of evolution of mediumship, responding to the 3 worlds where we evolved ourselves:

1.   Thời Kỳ Hạ Thiên              Điển Hạ Thiên         Various médiums

2.   Thời Kỳ Trung Thiên         Điển Trung Thiên    The Spiritual Chief and the two approved médiums: Chơn Tâm and Tường Khánh

3.   Thời Kỳ Cao Thiên            Điển Cao Thiên       The Spiritual Chief in Spirit, the perfect médium Nguơn Tinh and the Đồng Tử Vô Vi.

And not only the mediums, by their role of receivers, must by a anvanced Purification and Meditation, realize this state of Purity and Ecstasy, but all of us, the Pure Caodaists, especially all the called ones of “Ban Cao Thiên Đài” We must strive our constant efforts, perseve towards this goal of Mediumship, Enlightenment and Ecstasy, which is the realization of the Divine Self. We have to reach the Soul of our Soul, to be in Union with the Eternal.

Thus, a dozen Spirits (like the Revered Chief Hổn Ngươn Thiên Sư and the first-time elected Saint Thể Liên Tiên Nữ,) who were our father, son, daughter or classmates, having left (by death) their material envelope, were admitted from the outset in the entourage of the Master; they returned, according to their rank, to bring us the Word or the Orders of the Eternal Father.

Better still, The Four Blessed (Tứ Bữu) who have the most perfect Instruction, Purification and Faith, realized in their lifetime “Here and Now”, this state of Ecstasy and Serenity that allows their Supra Divine Soul to incarnate in the medium and to manifest themselves, to reveal the Truth as the Pure Spirits of the Real World.

In the end, we find a chapter of the messages of these Higher Spirits, in particular from Bữu Nguơn under the title of Ái Trước Thiên Tôn, Bữu Tinh or Tây Sư Tinh Quân and Bữu Sơn or Nam Sư Thanh Sơn.

Is there any more obvious proof, of the realization of the Divine, of the Eternal in oneself! What glory!

« Mừng thay mối Đạo Cao Thiên,

Mừng thay kẻ tục người Tiên trao lời!”

Quí hóa thay Đạo Chánh của Thầy!

Three Stages of Caodaism

Caodaism has agitated the public opinion and the authorities in Vietnam since the 1920’s by its sudden appearance, its rapid expansion, its social importance, as much as the number of its different sects.

It has been labeled as Renovated Buddhism or New Religion, and is believed to be generally derived from the superstition or fantasy of men. Let us try to understand this new religion in the study that will follow.

First Caodaism was revealed by spiritualism: Now, what is spiritualism? We know that spiritualism has existed for a long time and is commonly practiced in Asia, Europe and America. Are there no well known centers and Spiritual Societies which have published their work in many books and magazines?

Caodaism interests people who have faith in God and his Saints, in the Survival of the Soul, in an invisible world. In Indochina, an article by Nam Phong (April 1932, p 393 to 401), retraced the purpose, technique, and results of these invocation sessions of the spirits. The article also spoke of a Recueil de Hundred Poems collected at Hà Tiên, where this practice was popular and represented one of the elite’s favorite distractions. It was indeed at Hà Tiên or Phú Quốc where Mr. Ngô Minh Chiêu, during these sessions, received the Revelation of the Higher Spirits. Mr. Chiêu was introduced to the Life beyond death, to deliverance. But in most occasions, only more or less perfect poems are obtained on vulgar subjects or on medical recipes.

But soon after being recalled to Sài Gòn, he confided this secret to a small group of friends who founded the Cần Thơ Center. He himself practiced with zeal and fervor the fasting, the prayers, the detachment and the meditation. Yet for want of absolute abstinence, he did not achieve his goal because he died without achieving anything wonderful.

First Stage in Tây Ninh (1926 to 1929) Hạ Thiên

Mr. Lê văn Trung, strong personality from Chợ Lớn, received instruction to expand the movement for altruistic and humanitarian purpose. Under his impulse, a vast organization founded the Holy Center of Tây Ninh, with solemn inauguration, and under the propaganda of his team, oratories were quickly created everywhere in Cochinchina and Cambodia, grouping from one to two thousand enthusiastic followers, recruited in all classes.

In the 1st Stage, the Most Merciful Divine Master, responding to the deep aspirations of the people of Annam, thirsting for moral ideal, keeping a good foundation of Confucianism and Buddhism and an innate sense of Soul Survival and Faith in God, sent Revelation to him.

Messages in Quốc Ngữ and in Chinese characters and even in French were received, which excited the crowd. A Preleminary Teaching was offered to refocus Faith and Principal Virtues on Love for Humanity and on Charity.

Prayers were extracted from ancient books; costumes, dignities and ranks were distributed according to the 3 known Branches: Phật, Tiên, Thánh.

In this initiation, God wanted to bring back to Unity all the Religions founded on his mandate by different Instructors, and who really lost their prestige, for having deviated, deformed or transgressed more or less from the Truth.

But the rapid success, both from a moral and a material standpoint, have intoxicated and incited the dignitaries to commit abuses. They spoke of nothing less than to build at the Holy Center, a cathedral of one hundred thousand piastres of the time, as seat worthy of the Supreme Being.

Men are born of God in spirit and matter. Their intimate fervor has touched and called the Divine Master to their deliverance, but their vile ambition and their pride have removed the God of Love and Justice, who told them that no splendid cathedral is needed:

« Bạch Ngọc từ xưa Lão ngự rồi,

Chẳng cần Hạ Giái vọng Cao Ngôi;

Sang hèn trối kệ, Tâm là quí,

Tâm ấy Tòa Sen của Lão ngồi »

And then:

Người muốn rõ Đạo Trời huyền diệu,

      Thì phải lo chánh yếu mà tìm;

Lo chi mảng tải huỳnh kim,

Dựng lầu xây cát cho bìm sắn leo!

Shortly after the brief appearance of the Divine Ray, and long before the exasperated Mr. Đốc Phủ Ca formulated his protest and signaled his separation, the Most High spontaneously revealed himself to the Rạch Giá center, where another group had received the continuation of His Tây Ninh Teaching.

In April 1930, God awarded the

“Tu Chơn Thiệp Quyết” collection,

brillant in clarity and pure wisdom, for the moral education of human values based on the known Principes of Confucianism and Buddhism.

In February 1931, in response to the earnest and sincere wishes of Mr. Đốc Phủ Ca, following his petition, God awarded the 2nd collection,

“Chánh Tà Yếu Lý” (The Good versus the Bad Way)

where He showed at the same time, the misdeeds of Tây Ninh’s group and the sublimes principes of the Way, as spiritual education to be rigorously observed. The poem was of 50 quadrains or 200 verses, a true miracle opening.

« Trên bịa đặt một hình Thượng Đế,

     Dưới tóm thâu hiếm kẻ vút nanh;

Chước ma kế quỉ sẵn dành,

Chờ cơn nước bí cờ dành vào tay. » (lạm quyền)

“Lo sao cho mờ kẻ thấp hèn,

Buôn Trời bán Phật chẳng kiên,

Chẳng Thần, chẳng Thánh, chẳng Tiên, chẳng phàm!”

These two sacred and golden bibles, always glittering with the Spirit of the Master, which we have been reciting since then, have been denied by MM. Trung, Tắc and others, now bewitched by the Spirit of Satan. Their inferior nature took them back, and henceforth, nothing Sacred was revealed any more to them and for good reason. MM. Đốc Phủ Trang and Tương, of the same team, were very dedicated to save the wrecked boat and to rebuild the movement, but alas, themselves overwhelmed and rejected, not willing however to recognize the loyalty of Mr Đốc Phủ Ca, founded another Center at Mr. Tương’s residence in Bến Tre, and attracted the docile crowd of followers. But there they walked at random to the course of their fantasies and imagination, because the Master had made his choice and continued His silent work at His new selection.

« Quí nhơn mới tìm đặng quí vật »,

« Nhà quân tử mới có quân tử đến ».

To the pure and sincere hearts, God pours His Blessing.

It was the end of the 1st stage and the beginning of the 2nd stage.

Second Stage at Rạch Giá and Mỹ Tho (1930 to 1937) or Trung Thiên

In March 1930, died in Rạch Giá a very humble, faithful, fervent and pure heart believer. The Divine Master, as a favor and example, granted her Beatification and charged her with a special and glorious mission! She, who became the beloved daughter in spirit of God and Holy Mother, who under the radiant title of “Nữ Phước Thần, Thể Liêng Tiên Nữ”, now came back to bring us the Master’s Teaching!

What a glory!

The Master poured out His Grace in abundance: First at the Heavenly Paradise it was a majestic and solemn meeting for the proclamation and inauguration of the new and first Holy Site; it would be necessary to read the detail and the protocol of this auguste session in the Court of the Gods of Heaven.  Then there was the appointment of the Spiritual Leader, the nominated mediums, the new Sacred College (Hiệp Thiên Đài), the hierarchy of the faithful, the symbol, the dignities, ranks and costumes to distinguish and raise us to a higher plane, from the previous groups carried away by the spirit of Evil. At the Holy Site established in Mỹ Tho, Truth was revealed in all its sublimity: Laws of Creation, Source of Life, Natural Evolution of Man and his Cosmos, etc… Appropriate prayers were granted in full.

During this happy period, the crowd, however small (about 4000), radiated with happiness and enthusiasm because they were all honest with ardent faith.

However, the goal was still far away, because the Way (Đạo) was too subtle, the Master too perfect to reach at this early stage, with our impure nature.

While He was organizing and granting His Teaching, the Master’s mysterious and expert hands were operating the sorting and selection, not without warning us carefully, in sublime lessons, for our own rescue!

Many followers, relying on the limited knowledge of their intellect and their ego self, begin to discuss the Sacred Laws, to control the instructions received, to even criticize the prayers. Some even refused to submit to the modest Spiritual Leader who already revealed to be a supernatural man, for in addition to his sacred and fundamental mission, he was already illuminated by the Divine. He represented the Master’s Word (Hổn Ngươn Thiên Sư, Spiritual Leader of Hiệp Thiên Đài).

His very difficult and delicate task was to organize the Holy Site, receive and apply Laws and Teachings, centralize and control all mediums and their writings.

Scission then occurs, at the whim of each; from there were born the Centers of:

Quản Lò, Bạc Liêu with as leaders Trần Đạo Quang, Nguyễn văn Thiệu, Trương Kế An, Trần văn Đây;

Phước Long, Thới Bình, Cầu Kho etc…

And the numerous “Nhà Tịnh” (sects Tiên Thiên Đại Đạo) led by Lê Kim Tỵ, Nguyễn văn Tòng, Nguyễn Hữu Tài of Bến Tre, Phan Tường Mạnh, … with extravagant conceptions out of their intellect.

This was the 2nd stage with its sublime teaching and also its dissidence; but the doctrine was too subtle to be understood and executed the first time.

An upheaval as important as in the previous stage was subject to a severe selection.

The imperfect nature of man, already far removed from perfection due to self pride and materialistic ambition, was to struggle with the “Me”, the acquired knowledge of the intellect. It was necessary to dematerialize, detach oneself from the ego self to reach the Divine Self.

This is not understood by some leaders of the Mỹ Tho site, still infatuated with their personality and, sure of their physical senses. Although very fervent and selfless, they did not know how to “Renew their Souls”, to be reborn in Spirit, to incarnate the Spirit of Purity.

« Sao cho nhựt nhựt mỗi tân,

Nhựt tân nhứt nhựt, tự tân cho mình »

The warnings were not lacking to those who claimed to have their Spirits, their God, and their Truth.

« Lời Thầy phán, phải tin phải tưởng,

Tiếng Thầy răn, chớ cượng chớ sai. »

« Lửa thử thét, vàng thau mới nổi,

Gió sàng dê, trấu lép vừa rao. »

« Trời lộng lộng thinh thinh lẩm rẩm,

     Đạo vơi vơi thẩm thẩm minh mang;

Muốn cho thông suốt mọi đàng,

Bền lòng kiên nhẩn, chắc gan thử rèn.”

We were at the Good and Hard School! The Invisible worked silently, delicately!

« Lửa thử thét, ngày càng thêm hực,

     Gió sàng dê, thời khắc chẳng ngừng ;

To others, He said:

« Đừng ai thêu dệt, dệt thêu,

Đừng ai bày chuyện, bày diều dối dân.

Lòng ma miệt Phật bảo đừng,

Luật Trời Luật nước phải tuân mọi bề ! »

Paternal Advises of the Perfect Master! Who is Love, Intelligence as well as Supreme Justice!

In short, at the end of 1937, the Spiritual Leader, exasperated by the disagreement with the Temporal, in spite of the Sacred Union, had to retire to Long Xuyen with a small group of Dignitaries, adepts and His Sacred College (Ban Đồng Tử and Hiệp Thiên Đài).

Third Stage at Tân An (1938 to 1960) or Cao Thiên

The waves of this deep change have taken almost two decades to calm down. Yet the work of the Master continued: The Dignitaries and the faithful gathered around their Beloved Chief who continued to preach, to convert, to reassure the sheep terrified or lost in the storm: here humility will take place of intead of excuse from our brothers lost in the turmoil. We want, to shed light, to reveal the Truth, moreover according to the words of the Master who has planned and predicted everything to save us!

Warning! My children! Beware of the temptations of the Spirit of Satan!

The inexorable selection took place and we were the lucky ones elected to pass to the 3rd Stage (or Bực Cao Thiên) which must include three secondary levels. We honor ourselves to be His True Sons, the Good Seed to serve His Cause which is ours and that of Humanity!

The School of Truth:

Giảng Đàn Chơn Lý Vô Hình của Đức Chí Tôn

was opened to preach the Doctrine, while waiting to establish the Holy Site in Tân An City in 1940-41.

Apart from the last reworkings for the organization of the Temporal (costumes, grades, offices, regulations) to adapt to a higher level, because we were going to enter resolutely in the Vô Vi (life without form) and to distinguish us from the previous groups, a precious manual of Spiritual Purification was awarded to us to complete the Teaching of the Pure Truth revealed previously, with focus on deepening and executing. This was the « Thanh Tịnh Sám Hối Kinh » (Daily Self Confession).

This Sacred Book and the detailed teaching by the Director of Studies

Đốc Tràng Giảng Đàn Chơn Lý Vô Hình của Đức Chí Tôn,

in person Tây Sư Tinh Quân,

as well as the precise and numerous instructions of the Higher Spirits, brought us, with how many difficulties and efforts because of our millennial ignorance, to the present point of Spiritual Evolution.

Certainly everyone practices the teaching with enthusiasm and zeal; and if we are still far from attaining the Infinite Perfection Goal, we are delighted and sure of being on the right way, guided by the Master’s Voice. We walk with certainty and confidence in the calm and serenity!

There are only a few hundred of us left, and apart from the Dignitaries and the Sacred College, most of the faithful are of the poor class, and consequently, all the more worthy of our love and our solicitude!

And taking a look at the great road traveled, we feel an immense pity for our misguided brothers of other sects, or of certain other religions, who have remained in the dark night, especially those of the Nhà Tịnh (Tiên Thiên Đại Đạo) sects, some of whose leaders incur in penance the consequences of their unconsciousness or their harmful illusions for not being able to distinguish calmly the Voice and the Spirit of Light, of Wisdom, and the fallacious temptations of the Spirit of Satan!

On Spiritism

Coming back to Spiritism, origin of Caodaism, let no one be offended by the means employed by the Divine Creator to reveal Himself and speak to His sons, His creatures! Let the laymen, the uninitiated who are biased or in a spirit of disparagement, unwilling to devote time and trouble for careful and open mind examination; let those who may have acquired ideas preconceived by our brothers of other sects, do not hasten to judge us hastily.

We generally do not believe anything that is not visible, material, accessible to our senses or intellect, and we ask that everything be palpable, positive; instead of seeing, understanding, feeling with “that subtle, deep, innate sense” which is our Divine nature. (Lương Tri or Thiên Tánh, Tánh Linh, Tự Nhiên).

“If the divine force does not live in us, how could the Divine (the Divine Cause) delight us” (charms us) – Goethe

“Only the Divine within us can awaken the Divine in another “, says Krishnamurti again.

Likewise, the Divine in each of us, in the Son, must recognize the Pure Word, Sage of Truth of the Divine Father. This awareness is possible with the true Divine Self, and not with the ordinary senses or the intellect.

So observe in calm and perfect serenity, seek to recognize in the heart of your Inner Self, if the words of the Master, His words pure and mysterious, do not express the Eternal Truth to which you ardently aspire like the Light in the night: It is the Soul of our soul that comes for our salvation!

And what subject of Meditation, of Study is more exciting, more worthy of interest, than to know the Goal of our Life, the Primordial Cause of our Existence, the Reason of Ultimate Being of our Real Life, of Creation, of the Eternal!

The Lord, Father and Master, states that He incarnated four times in the Four Great Teachers whom He sent on earth to bring to the failing human race His Word and Truth! Let some sectarian spirits do not reject a priori These Merciful Revelations of the Divine Creator without careful and impartial scrutiny because He said:

«   Tiếng dậy khắp, Thầy Trời dạy Đạo,

Cả Năm Châu, Tôn Giáo mội không. »

«   Nến Chơn Lý trang bằng rất quí,

     Mối Vô Vi Âu Mỹ đương tìm;

Thương con Thầy dạy tất tim,

Sao con nở để sắng bìm phủ leo »

One would always doubt Mystery and Miracle; we are speaking of possible deceits, lack of sincerity of mediums and their writings. It is permissible, however, to pose as a basis that we are more here in the world of ambitions and interests, than we are all animated by absolute sincerity and ardent desire, by the unique and pure concern to pierce the Enigma of the Creation and the Eternal, for our own Salvation and that of Humanity!

We are above all, in all humility, the Servants of the Master, and the Sacred Cause (the Way) with hope to receive His Grace and Mercy!

The unclean hearts, the deceitful ones, have been mercilessly eliminated, vigorously castigated by His mysterious Hand.

« Sách đã dạy tôi ngay con thảo (Trung – Hiếu),

Sách nào cho lòng cáo dạ muông,

Khen cho lủ chuột bầy chồn,

Đào hang trổ ngách khoe khôn cậy tài!”

“Cốt đồng che lấp mắt ai,

Cốt đồng che đặng mắt Trời mảy ru!

Khuyên lớn nhỏ muốn tu thành Phật,

          Đừng cưu lòng đố tật hiền nhơn;

Ghen tương, kiêu ngạo, khoe khoan,

Tham lam, giả dối, đừng mang vào mình! ”

“Đừng tưởng Trời cao mà giả dối,

Mắt Thần như chớp khó phui pha! ”

Is this indeed the Voice of Truth of the Divine Father, speaking firmly to His beloved Divine Sons!

And then, to tell the truth, during the 1st Stage of the movement, when all the believers, by favor, participated in the work of the Master by paving the Way to His Coming, the most skeptical, the malicious, the strong minds have not failed to initiate multiple almost irreverent trials, before acquiring the faith themselves and to recognize the Divine Miracle.

Finally, in this time of vertiginous material progress that led the men to discover and use radiotelephony, magnetic mines and flying bombs, that derive from human inventions, which are actually hidden assets and materials existing in nature driven by subtle sciences, created by the will of the Creator, may we admit that He too, does have a more advanced radio system, in His infinite Essence, mysterious, perfect, pure and without the intervention of matter, that He could use to instruct and save humanity, His well-beloved creatures!

Is it evident that physical sciences, discoveries of the intellect in a purely material civilization do not bring true happiness to the human race, but carry as price disastrous results which tarnish their value and glory?

The intensive struggle for life, every day more complicated, removes from Life its real meaning, its noblility, its ultimate goal of wisdom and harmony, which is the ideal of Perfection and Love as the Heavenly Father wants.

Trời là Đức Hiếu Sinh, là Luật Sanh Sanh Hóa Hóa, và là Luật Tấn Hóa Tinh thần và vật chất.

God has come: in due time, in Spirit to speak, to communicate with the Spirit of His Sons, incarnated in the Holy Center of the Mediums, and because of the current state of the intellectual ivolution of humanity, no longer become incarnate in one Instructor.

Every man has his instructor who is his Divine self connected to the Creator Spirit. Thanks to the thorough and impartial examination of all what has been revealed, we can see that the Teaching is marked with wisdom, perfection and pure reason (Chơn Lý, the Truth), that every man can feel and verify by the innate sense of his Divine Self, his Intimate Soul.

The messages, the poetry collected, shine through the beauty, the purity of the Word. The Science of God is so subtle, so learned, that it is unapproachable to the intellect of mediums and men in general, uninitiated. It often takes weeks and months for the Director of Studies, yet touched by the graces of the Master, to grasp the meaning, assimilate and finally preach to those around him.

Of course, the same serenity, the same State of Soul and the same purity of Divine Essence are needed from top to bottom to realize the connections, the transmissions of the waves.

From there, the important role of the mediums; their advanced and continuous education and purification are part of the Sacred College followed by the Corps of Officiants (Ban Pháp Sư, Đồng Tử, Ban Cao Thiên Đài).

This sublime science, learned, supreme from God, Creator of man, must be acquired and practiced by various means with effort and patience, with faith and sincerity.

« Tìm ngọc báu, non trèo biển lặng,

     Kiếm châu lành, giải nắng dầm sương;

Đạo cao phải học mới tường,

Minh mông biển rộng khó lường không đong. »

Knowledge of the Eternal is infinite!

Some of the Cantatas revealed on this Science of Life, are so gleaming with light, purity and perfection that we could see clearly in spirit. Once sung in chorus by the Sacred College, they burst and shine the whole majesty and glory of the King of Heaven, the Master of the Universe and of the real world!

« Tam Kỳ vừa gặp hội nầy,

Tan sương vén ngút, rẻ mây trong Trời! »

The Voice of the Divine Light dispels the darkness of ignorance and wakes us up to the Eternal Life!

On the issue of terminating this long preamble, we are deferring all the merit of our work to the grace and the mercy of the adored and beloved Master, who saves us with His glance His Love!

On our knees and with deep humility, we vow to serve Him with all our Soul, in Spirit and in Truth.

We sincerely respect our Spiritual Leader. Elected and sent from the Master (Hổn Nguơn Thiên Sư) who has always guided us, first as a Man for many years, then in Spirit, since he is returned to God, having left his material envelope on July 13, 1940.

Finally, we can not forget all the solicitude of our other Guide Spirit, our Soul Sister, the Holy Thể Liêng Tiên Nữ, whom we give here, for epilation, the “Daily Salvation”, of a real and pure literary performance.

All that comes from the Divine Master radiates indeed light, grace, love and perfection!

It is the Lord, it is Life!

Glory to the Merciful God!

May your reign come!

The Eternal and Divine Sience of the Soul or of Life

Ngọc lịnh ban hành Khãi Cữu Cung,

Thượng hành hạ hiệu đua công quả,

Đế Đạo hoằng khai chiếm thượng phong.

Note: All the Creatures and Manifestations of the Supreme Being are marked with the Seal of the Trinity.

Cao Đài true inspired meaning is:

« Cao Việt Thiên Đài »

The Supra Divine Region of the Soul

The “Cao Đài Đại Đạo” is the Great Way – Creation of God; “Cao Đài Đại Đạo, Đạo Trời Sanh” is the Divine Teaching of Chơn Lý, the Eternal Truth, and the Supreme Science of the Spirit and Life.

“Caodaism” is not, as has been understood vulgarly and superficially a religion or a “tôn giáo”. “Tôn giáo” is a religion where one always finds an Instructor. The followers are those who follow this Teacher or his teaching, or even beyond.

The “Cao Đài Đại Đạo” or Caodaism is a Teaching for the whole mankind, for the human race (Nhơn Loại), which means for “everyone”, and not for a collectivity or a group.

That “everyone” practices it in true contemplation, and “everyone” is the whole humanity. He shows the Eternal Truth. He alone is the only Instructor that Man, that is to say the Human, must discover within himself.

This Instructor is none other than man Divine Soul, whom he recovers and who, from now on, directs him in the course of his evolution.

It is because man has forgotten this natural Teacher, his Master, the one who knows everything and sees everything, that God, in his Gracious Mercy, reminds him. This Instructor is the Divine Self in man, his True Soul, his Own Essence, himself.

Thus, all divine teaching rests on the inner life, that of the Soul. This is the “Know Yourself” but the “True Self” and not the vulgar “me”.

Man, this stranger, sails on the ocean of beings, in a boat without rudder or sail, and that is why he does not know where he comes from, or where he is going.

And yet, he says to himself, “I am a man.”

His Soul alone is his Master, his natural Protector, his Guide, his Savior: and it is for him to find the perfect serenity of all his being (lặng Tâm yên Tánh), an essential condition without which the study of the Spiritual Life, of the Nature of the Soul, drawn from the Sacred Scripture, the True, would be impossible, even if one has to consecrate one’s life time.

Sincere remorses, profoundly humiliated by our nature muddied in material pursuit, we turn back despite winds and tides, pushed by our human personality, we leave slowly, but boldly, full of enthusiasm in search of our Soul “Cái Đó” in the World of Reality, which gives us ecstasy, peace and happiness.

Thus, selfishness, ambition, ignorance, and all the peculiarities that make us believe: “we are ourselves separated”, are exposed by the Divine Light, the glow in the night.

Đèn Chơn Lý phá mù sanh chúng,

Sao các con chẳng dụng rọi đường,

Rọi trong phế phủ cang trường,

Rọi ngoài Luân Lý Cang Thường cho xong.

Rọi cho thức tỉnh giống giòng,

Rọi gần cho rõ đặng phòng rọi xa.

With this marvelous glow, we make a torch that dispels darkness in the most remote corners of our hidden nature, and radiant, it illuminates our whole being. Then the Light appears.

Đuốc Chơn Lý Trung Ương sáng tõ,

Người đi đường phải ngó mà theo;

Thuyền đi vững lái êm lèo,

Bộ đi tránh khỏi hiểm nghèo gai chông.

Ấy là Đuốc Chủ-Nhơn-Ông,

Cã mưa chẳng tới, to giông không lờ.

This Light is really Us: it is the Revealed Knowledge of the Real World, our True Homeland, and the Fatherland of all Human races.

This Light, the Soul of our Soul, is the Spirit of God, the Divine in Man.

Thus, enter into the Kingdom of Happiness, of Calm and Divine Clarity, only the one who, piously, finally dares to leave the world of the senses, who ceases, with all his being, to attach himself to perishable things with his “forbidden fruit” (Trái cấm) knowledge by which he lost his “divinity” and his “earthly paradise”.

From there, in this Kingdom, by gazing back on the life of our body, we suffer, because the whole humanity suffers: – love overflows us.

We have the good idea to address to the Head of the Colony, in order to obtain the authorization to build in Tân An city, a Temple dedicated to God, the Very High and Very Powerful, whose majestic radiation (Điển Linh) of his Glory illuminates us and gives us back the Life, the True Life of Man: the Immortality, the Eternal Present.

Đạo Thông mới trở về Trời,

Cùng Cha sum hiệp đời đời an vui.

Indeed the Spirit alone (Đạo Thông) remains forever. With the death of the “me”, be it the anticipated death of the personality, or the death we all expect, time and space disappear. We are in the Eternal; we are all “Here” and “Now”, we, the Spirit of God, the Soul of Creation.

In the Holy Scripture:

 « Lý là của Trời;

Trời còn, Chơn Lý vẫn còn.

Con nào theo Chơn Lý, vẫn còn tự nhiên. »

What prodigious time we are in!

The appearance of a Divine Ray (Một Tia Chơn Lý) that venerably and piously glorifies us with the name “Thánh Ngôn”, “the Teaching of God” gives us Source of Bliss; we draw on it with all our heart for our happiness on Earth.

What would then be the possession of all earthly goods in relation to this heavenly Gift of God?

Just little things, vain appearances, illusions of the human spirit, source of our sufferings!

O, my Lord, please save us!

Conclusion

Đạo là Đạo, Đạo chẳng phải là Tôn Giáo.

« Đạo là Sự Sống Thiệt. »

Thus, the Fundamental Principle of “Pure Caodaism” is based on this method of Concentration which aims to awaken the Eternal in oneself (Minh cái Minh Đức).

A pure Caodaist is therefore the Man who seeks to go back to the “Divine Source.”

« Tam Kỳ Nguyên Nguyên Bản Bản »

By this One and Great Way,

« Chơn Lý Tầm Nguyên Đại Đạo »

Truth is the Eternal in every Being

(Thiên Đạo là Thiên Lý nơi Tâm).

Thus, the symbol of “pure Caodaism” is the eye in the middle of the heart. It is the True Self of Man animated by the Divine Force.

« Con Người vốn là Thiêng Liêng, Trời nơi Tâm Vốn là Thiêng Liêng »

The path allotted for us is to realize this symbol in us, to liberate our inner life, our true being, and to give it the greatest possible growth.

For that, let us have an unbounded faith in our Pure Will and in a real hope without limit in our Realization, because:

“If the Divine Force did not live in us, how could the Divine delight us! » (Goethe)

So whether we are Hindu or Confucian, Christian or Buddhist, it does not matter:

We are Man, and that is enough.

And Man only has to follow His Way of Man traced within Himself.

« Đạo là Hột Giống tự nhiên,

Hóa sanh Trời Đất Mối Giềng Người Ta. »

« Trung Dung gốc bởi Chí Thành,

Đạo Thầy gốc bởi Hòa Bình Thế Gian. »

« Ðạo là phẳng lặng trang bằng,

Dường như gió tạnh Trời trăng đêm rằm.

Tây Trúc dạy: “Minh Tâm Kiến Tánh”,

Hàm Quan khuyên: “Luyện Tánh Tu Tâm”,

Lổ Ðông: “Dưỡng Tánh Tồn Tâm”,

Gia Tô: “Thượng Ðế tại Tâm” chẳng rời.

Tứ Ðại Thánh một lời chẳng khác,

                  Khác tại người xiêu lạc cãi canh;

But what does the word mean?

« Cao Đài »

« Cao Đài », is « Cao Việt Thiên Đài »

It’s the True Motherland of Man, of the Human Specie,

It is the highest plane of the Divine Atmosphere,

It is the Real World, without beginning or end,

The World of the Eternal Present,

Where Man had been born;

Where Man will come back one day,

The day when he will have completed with Perfection his Great Experience,

The Experience of God, of the Unity of Life, of the Essential Unity of all things.

So to be Religious is to undertake His True Task,

To be Religious is to do the Experience of God.

« Tu hành là Học làm Trời,

Phải nào kiếp kiếp làm Người Thế Gian »

The marvelous thing about this Experience is that Man, far from his original homeland, must realize it in himself, by himself.

The “Cao Đài” in Man must be a Spriritual High Tower, having

For foundations: Will, Pure Will;

For floors: Knowledge and its various degrees, and

For Summit: “True Love”.

The “Cao Đài” thus Realized in Man is the Supra Divine Region of the Soul.

Raised in the middle of the relative world, this Tower of the Absolute, composed entirely of Subtle Essence, is the Emblem of True Glory and True Happiness.

The Divine Teaching thus understood in its Sublimity, it is no longer necessary to manifest the Symbolic Eye, which has been suppressed on the Order of the above, since

“The Eye becomes Spirit, the Divine becomes Man”.

Man must be the Living Symbol of God.

From there, our emblem:

« Tam Kỳ Nguyên Nguyên Bản Bản »

« Chơn Lý Tầm Nguyên Đại Đạo »

Méditation

Định Tâm

“Diving Within”

in search for the True Self and the Eternal Kingdom of Happiness.

Thánh Kinh:

Định Tâm khuyên chớ hỏng hờ,

Định cho Thanh Tịnh đừng mơ việc ngoài ;

Định, Huệ một thể chẳng sai,

Định xong mới Ngộ, mê hoài sao nên.

Học Định Tâm phải bền mới được,

Đừng cho Tâm lo vượt cảnh ngoài,

Trong lòng đừng loạn đừng sai,

Ngăn ngừa ý mã rẻ hai Tâm Thần.

Tánh xứa trong trắng, trong ngần,

Định xong, liền thấy Huệ lần phát ra.

To acquire this knowledge: there is only one method: “Concentration”.

To practice Concentration, one has to be detached, which is to suppress the Desire or Inner Thirst and replace it by the Pure Will or True Sincerity.

Another way of saying: Get focussed on the detached, sincere and pure endeavors by overcoming the urge of self interest and wordly desires.

The method of Concentration requires, as first condition, the silence of the mind, which is the interruption of all thoughts, to reveal the Flower of Deep Wisdom.

Keep the intellectual mind silent and free from thought disturbance so that deep wisdom could emerge. And this is not easy.

Song le :

« Phép Định Tâm khó tày, bớ trẻ ! »

This silence of the mind is very difficult to obtain. Memories crowd in mass at the moment we want to drive them away; and if we arrive at the beginning of silence, there are often appearances of bizarre or grotesque images which have nothing to do with profound wisdom.

Man is thus faced with an inner life so independent, so unknown that it does not seem to be his.

It is very difficult to keep the mind still. Once we look for silence, memory of past occurences and strange images starts to show up. Man now has to face an unknown and seemingly independent internal life which evolves on its own, in disregard to its master.

Man still meditates and guesses that through this dark haze, vain effects of perishable things, exists a subtle world, illuminated by a softer Light, coming from the Truth, Radiance of the Eternal. He then begins to tear this veil of ignorance, and errors to put an end to his Spiritual Sleep, which had lasted since how many centuries, since the world of the forms envelops and makes him forget everything who was really “him.”

Man becomes now aware of a more subtil world, illuminated by the Light of Truth, from an Eternal Source. He starts to recognize the need to wake up from his long spiritual sleep to clear this veil of ignorane which envelops him within the world of forms and make him forget who he really IS.

To awaken himself, he needs to Meditate. Meditation is an act of awakening, not just siting still or reciting endlessly some tantrum. Meditation includes concentration, illumination and realisation.

Thiệt Định Tâm có ba phần Định:

1.   Định Thần              Concentration

2.   Định Huệ             Illumination

3.   Định Ngộ             Realisation

Note: Contemplation is the essence of action. From approaching Life fully, Contemplation is born. Contemplation is therefore Action. Thought, when complete, is Action.

Định Thần

Life Force Concentration

Life Force Concentration tends to apease mental troubles and return the Spiritual Forces to their pure original source.

Người muốn dẹp cho đặng những sự xao dợn, thì trước phải tầm đến « Cái Duyên », do đó mới ra Cái Cớ nầy ; phăng cầm cái Duyên mới chủ trị đặng cái Cớ, thì Tâm mới Định, Thần mới An.

« Xét cho trúng Mối mới an,

Lòng con bền vững, gọn gàn lắm con.”

Any effect has its cause. So, to master these mental disorders, let us first look for the cause that produces them. Knowledge is Power; it is a subtle means of which the real Intuition is used in its task of purification.

All effects have their own causes. To control those mental troubles, man has to look first for their cause. Knowledge has its power. It is a useful tool for self purification.

The voice of Intuition is the voice of the Eternal within one’s True Self, dependent on nothing but itself (Lý Trực Giác). The Forces of the Spirit are like scattered rays; but intelligently led and directed to the Inner Life, it is a Foyer of Light which allows us to analyze our Soul and to illuminate many facts. Therefore, the act of concentrating one’s forces must be accompanied by Meditation, which is the sustained effort to discern; to progressively bare one’s Being, to choose the essence of things (Cách Vật Trí Tri).

Intuitive knowlege is the trusted voice of man’s True Self; it emerges from God Within. Mental forces are like scattered ray waves, but once intelligently focussed and directed toward Internal Life, it becomes a light source for Soul analysis. This is the reason why Meditation requires constant Concentration, which helps discern the true essence of everything in life.

Effective Meditation brings enlightenment, which is Wisdom, resulting from understanding of the experiences. True Meditation is movement from the “Known” to the “Unknown”.

The “Known” is the phenomenal world, knowable by our senses. All the manifestations that we see there are effects whose causes must be sought, in the “Unknown World”, nominal and unmanifest.

Acting knowingly is therefore to act under the guidance of the Divine Eye within Self.

In other words: Meditation brings about Illumination, which is wisdom from understanding of the experiences. True meditation is a shift from the Known to the Unknown. The manifested world of the Known, which can be detected by the senses, has its source in the Unknown. Once man acts with full awareness of the “Cause”, he is guided by the Divine Eye Within.

a.    Về Phần Vật Chất : nó làm cử động Ngũ Quan và Tứ Chi Cơ Thể. Phần nầy là phần Biết Tự Nhiên Vô Ngã (Instinct or Sub-conscience)

Thus this Invisible and Animating Essence, part of the Inner Life of Man, is divided into two functions: Physical Force and Moral Strength.

The Physical Force can operate on its own initiative, which produces reflex movements, but above all it acts under the leading impulse of the Moral, which seems to be the central focus of Force Rays (Ngôi Thần), which thus obey to their conscience; hence the name: “Self-Consciousness”.

In other words: This invisible force behind all life also drives within every human being. It could be understood as having two functions: the physical and the moral manifestation. When acting as physical force, it generates impulsive reactions. As moral force, it becomes the center of consciousness where emanate awareness and self knowledge.

Therefore, through the knowledge of our inner life, we know the existence of the Infinite and its nature. And this is because: we are in Essence One with the Infinite and we carry the Divine Spark to the Holy Center of our Being, the Divine Cause excites us and we long to Return to our Eternal Source .

In other words: Thanks to our Internal Consciousness, we are now aware of the existence of Eternal Life. Because we are in essence “One” with the Eternal and we have at our Soul center of the Divine Spark, we aspire enthusiastically to come back to our Eternal Origin.

To grasp the speed of this invisible circulation of the Animating Essence forming the Inner Life of Man, let us consider Radiophonie. By this we see that Thought, in no time, has the power to go around the sky and the earth, since instantaneously it is transported to all places of the world.

In other words: To understand the invisible circulation speed of this driving Force inside Man, let us consider the radio or TV vibrations which instantaneously circulate the world to deliver sounds and images everywhere.

This center of the Vital Forces is called “human Soul”, or “heart-consciousness” of man.

Consciousness, driven by vital Forces is at the center of Man’s Soul.

The Energy Forces driving everything in the universe are like electromagnetic vibrations of light, audio and radio waves which travel at high speed to reach their destination nearly instantaneously. The sensory organs or the five senses (vision, smell, taste, hearing and feeling) are receptive to the physical vibrations. The spiritual consciousness is capable of perceiving other non physical broadcasts. The reception center lies deep within man’s Soul.

Any perception is therefore the reaction of an action coming from outside.

Man, living in this relative world, is subject to “natural laws of reaction,” making his body the intermediary organ between his Soul and the outside world.

In other words: Every perception is a reaction to an external stimulus. In this world of relativity, man is subject to the law of “natural reaction”, using this physical body as a bridge between the outside world and his soul.

By this faculty of perceiving and storing what comes from without, and also what happens within, this Consciousness of man, this Concentrated Creative Force, this action-holder, is also impression receptor. It is, moreover, a conscious mirror that illuminates and reflects what carries within.

In other world: This ability to perceive and store what comes from the external world, as well as what happens inside man, is called man Consciousness, always connected through the energy forces that pervade the universe. Man is like a mirror showing reflection of external and internal objects and events.

Cũng nhờ có sự tiếp xúc, sự chứa trụ và sự phản chiếu ấy mà có thành lập ra cái « Nhớ ». Nhờ có cái tài năng nhớ (faculty of remembrance) mà tự con trẻ còn nầm biết nhìn cha mẹ, chẳng lầm người dưng.

Rồi do theo cái tài năng ấy mà nó tập nghe, tập hiểu, rồi tập nói, tập làm nhửng điều của cha mẹ nó dạy, và nhửng sự của nó nghe, thấy.

The child thus learns to develop his Intellect, to orient his moral faculty in the path of knowledge of the world.

His intelligence is developped from the accumulation of experiences. With his activity externally focused, he works to amass wealth and glory. Moreover, adjusted to material life, he adapts himself to it by studying objectively the organic and inorganic world, whose laws he tries to discover.

Thus, intelligence is the development of the intellect in the path of knowledge of the material world, which has become good or bad depending on various relative social situations.

In other words: Man develops his mental intellect based on the assumption that he is separated from everything else. This intelectual capability allows him to seek wealth, fame, power for his ego self. His knowledge is acquired through experience accumulation and research on material laws to exploit natural resources and to self enrich. Proud of his capability and achievement, he expects to have abundant happiness on earth.

Man is proud of his intelligence which gives him all that can be called happiness and glory on Earth. He is proud of his intelligence which distinguishes him from the things of this world. He says to himself, “I am a man.”

But does he know: Who Man is??

Does he know where he comes from and where he is going?

If he does not even know the true condition of his existence, is intelligence worthless?

In others words: Does man know who he is and where he came from? If he is ignorant on those basic issues, he would continue to live in an illusory world created by his limited intellectual mind and his misguided belief in separation.

Here is this confession of helplessness expressed in the following poem:

Tu n’as pas senti, toi, lorsque tu trépassais,

Tu me vois naître, toi, moi, je te vois mourir.

Oh ! Savoir à quel rythme obéissent ces nombres ? »

Pascal has defined more clearly this ignorance of man:

“The man,” he said, “struggles between two extremities that touch each other. The first is pure natural ignorance (vô minh) where all men are born. The other end is where the great souls arrive who, having traveled all that men can know, find that they know nothing and meet in the same ignorance, from where they left, but it is a scholarly ignorance who knows himself.

In other words: Man is engaging in a debate between two extremes which ultimately touch back. One side includes most people living in pure natural ignorance. The other side includes learned erudits who think they know everything, to discover in the end that they don’t know anything. This could be called learned ingorance which finally joins the natural ignorance. (Pascal)

In this ephemeral world of relativity, man lives with memories from relationship caused by belief of separation. In human egoistic interaction, man looses his original feeling of love, which is replaced by greed, fear, envy and hate, all linked to ignorance.

It is because men live in the relative world, but do not know how to free themselves from these reactions, that all suffering occurs.

In other word: Because man does not know how to set free from his ego based reactions in this transitory and relative world, he continues to live in suffering. He sows the seed of suffering, but does not know how to make it fade away. That is why he said: “Living is suffering.”

Now, Cao Đài vanishes this veil of darkness by explaining its causes, so that man could makes suffering disapear. He then calms his mind to experience an harmonious live.

To overcome the tumult in his mind, man needs to understand its essence.

The mind stores memories, which are also a kind of energy attracting people emotions. This energy moves constantly and generates ideas or images, sometimes disturbing, strange and unclean. Under such circumstance, the mind is full of worries and operates in distresses from accumulated memories burrowed since the beginning of time.

Man may also use his intellectual power to imagine ideas for products or services demanded by society to satisfy people material needs. Ego based desires are reinforced in this drive for worldly satisfaction, and contribute to further internal turmoils and external conflicts.

This is how world civilization has evolved, mostly based on pleasure search and matrialistic values, with weak moral foundation.

Man always lives in fear and trouble; that is why serenity, clarity and happiness constantly elude him. How could he reach awakening and saintliness within such condition?

He needs to be aware of his current standing in the spiritual evolution and fully trust his internal God for guidance. He no longer has to long for illusory future at the expense of Present reality.

Nên phải gặp lại đặng « Cái Đó », mới có thể cảm ứng với Trời Thiêng Liêng Vô Hình, mới có thể Sống nơi « Vô Vi Cảnh Giái. »

Hảy trọn Đức Tin chắc thật rằng Ngôi ấy Thường Có, Thường Ngự nơi Trung Tâm Điểm, thì Ngôi nầy là Ngôi rất quí báu, rất Thiêng Liêng, mà hiện ở nơi rất xát cận, rất mật thiết, rất u vi nơi Tâm đó vậy.

There is only One God, Creator of the universe. He lives within Man and uses Man as a tool for creation to expand Life. Man exists because of God Will. God and Man have the same Essence and the same function. Faith allows Man and God to merge as “One”. To fulfill his mission Man has to fully trust God Within for guidance on his Divine Path. This Eternal Light Within is the only teacher that man needs. Other Saints and Masters came to remind man this living Truth.

                             Lãnh riêng phần săn sóc chúng sanh;

                                      Lãnh phần chấp chưởng quyền-hoành,

Cầm cân phạt dữ thưởng lành thế Ta.

Cầm quyền Chơn Lý Giái Ba,

Chí Chơn, chí Chánh, vô tà, vô tư. » (237

Lại có câu:

« Độ mình rồi, độ dẩn chúng sanh. »

                             Cứ quẩn quanh quả báo luân hồi”;

Cho nên tã đạo dối Trời,

Hư hư thiệt thiệt mê người khá thương.

Ngày nay Chơn Lý bày tường,

Khuyên con tỉnh mộng bương bương trở về. » (260)

Most people on earth are confused, fearful and restless because they forget where they come from, who they really are, and where they should go. They wander endlessly, without realizing their mission and not knowing their way home.

Using force, terror, conditioning or deceit may get some leaders to rise via democratic election or authoritarian power manipulation, but won’t help the stakeholders find true peace and happiness, which exist only in full awareness of their purpose on earth.

Whoever merges with God Within is in position to be the Divine Illumination reminding others of the True Values that they already learned, and the True Path to fulfill their own mission before returning home. This is the qualification of a true leader. He knows that he is part of God plan for humanity and is faithfully committed to carry it on.

Muốn biết do Trời mà sửa trị thế gian, thì phải do nơi Đạo, vì Đạo là Trời vậy.

So our feelings and emotions flow telepathically from one to the other; but when we meditate, we must put our thoughts in words, otherwise they can not be formed, although these words are not spoken in an audible way.

This is a way to prove that our inner life is developing from natural ignorance to scholarly ignorance; scholar, because he knows how to compose words and sentences to communicate ideas; ignorant because he ignores his own nature and his proper powers!

In other words: Our feelings and emotions spurt out as telepathic connection between human, but when we meditate, we give unpronounced words to our thoughts. Our internal life develops by itself from natural ignorance to learned ignorance; learned because it uses words and sentences to communicate ideas. We are still ignorant since we ignore our own nature and our potential power.

Con Người Vốn là Thiêng Liêng ; Trời nơi Tâm  Vốn là Tiêng Liêng ;

Because man entangles himself too much with worldly pleasures and desires that he forgets his Divine origin. He could no longer hear God voice calling on him. His animal soul (thần hồn) lost communication with his divine soul (linh hồn). To restablish contact, he needs help from the intermidiary soul (anh hồn).

The link between God and human is disconnected, that’s why he needs intervention of intermediate energy.

Since man no longer upholds moral conduct, his heart is not pure enough to be receptive. He looses his capability to receive divine energy from God Within because there are too much noises and dirts blocking his mind.

That’s why meditation is needed to regenerate the pure original energy. But how should he meditate to reestablish internal serenity and reconnect with God within? What is the gem that God put in his heart? This is a divine energy receptor inside man, directly connected to the Original Source.

He looses his connection because of impure memories. When born to this world, the child inherits an empty mind which serves as his light. Growing up, he accumulates personal memories and emotions from his various encounters with the world, which cloud his pure initial God given light and give him a sense of separation. His inate natural radiance is gradually obscured by acquired knowledge built by intellectual reasoning and self centered feelings. He now operates under the dark cloud of ignorance and greed.

When man lives in separation, he misuses his intellect to appropriate for himself material wealth and power through ruse and manipulation and forgets entirely his divine obligation. This is the current status of earth civilization based of want and greed, as well as satisfaction of worldly pleasure, putting more and more distance between man and God.

Thế gian ngày nay dường chia ra bốn hạng Người:

1.   Hạng thứ nhứt, không kể Thiên Đàng, Địa Ngục là chi, sống tới đâu thì hay tới đó, mảng theo Tình Dục, Vật Dục, Quyên Lợi tư riêng, chẳng chút ái ngại chi cả.

What are we trying to achieve in meditation? What do we want to keep quiet, the mind or the heart? Is there another center within us that could be receptive to high vibration of the divine energy? This center would not be by itself good or bad. But it serves as an invisible mirror reflecting the truth. Originally, the mirror is empty, clean and unbiaised. As man becomes spoiled with worldly desires, it looses its receptivity for direct communication with God.

Man starts to see himself as a separate entity, far away for his Original Father and detached from the rest of the universe. He confines himself to an illusory prison, disconnected from his Divine Reality. His isolation in time and space is self imposed due to his ignorance and his indolence.

Suffering comes from this self isolation in the prison of illusion. Man can only free himself when he reconnects with his divine internal light, source of infinite wisdom. The connection process cannot be achieved through intellectual reasoning or academic study, only through meditation.

Meditation is not sitting still with closed or sleepy eyes, or taking some drugs to escape from the tumult of external environment. Meditation is rather an integrated process of total attention for self awareness every moment, every minute of our life. Don’t look for easy shortcut or method. Just live fully in the Present and get our energy focused on the Now with calm and sincerity to stay above the mental and emotional disturbances.

Vững Ngôi Thần mỗi mỗi đều thông;

Tuân Luật Trời dứt nốt phàm tâm;

“Bạn Trời Thiệt bạn tri âm,

Bạn Trời thiệt bạn dạy làm Phật Tiên.

Cảnh Phật Tiên đoàn viên cảm ứng,

Về đến nơi mới vững Tam Tài;

     Đạo nuôi Thần như lộc nuôi thân;

Thần mà tinh khiết muôn phần,

Càng vui, càng vẻ, Đạo càng được khen! »

The hundreds energy knots (thần hồn) will have to move in unison with their master (anh hồn) to establish a common humanity (chơn thể chung) connected to God. Once he is aware and stands firm on his divine mission, man co-creates with God additional universes.

But the first step is to stay extremely determined and peaceful like the moon in a clear windless night, so that everything man does fully reflects Truth. In this serenity, emerge the bright humanity soul shining peace and justice on all life for eternity.

The world will have an advanced spiritual civilisation in which man happily lives in harmony with himself and with all. This is truly Heaven on earth.

“Muốn học Ðạo đừng mê mới được,

                        Mê muội làm bạc nhược tinh thần;

Làm cho hũ bại bổn căn,

Làm cho dứt hẳn Lương Năng Tánh Trời.

Làm cho hồn phách rã rời,

Làm cho cách trở Ta Người xa nhau. (261)

Khuyên các trẻ mau mau tỉnh giấc,

                        Mới gọi rằng đáng mặt làm con;

Ðiểm Linh Quang thường còn chẵng mất,

                        Muốn thành Tiên thành Phật phaỉ “Tin”;

Quỉ ma yêu quái củng mình,

Có lòng dục vọng khó nhìn “Chơn Thân”.

Con ngươi đen trắng chưa phân.

Mà mong điểm đạo truyền thần cho ai? (263)

Muốn hành Ðạo đừng sai chữ Ðức,

                        Hành Ðạo cho thiệt mực một đường;

Noi trang Tứ Thánh làm gương,

Noi gương Ðạo Ðức chử “Thương” làm đầu.

Thương thì nhẩn nhịn nhường nhau,

Nhường nhau mới đặng trước sau thuận hòa.” (299)

English Part on Méditation

Thus, “Concentration” aims to appease mental disturbances and restore internal harmony.

What is difficult is that these thoughts and images that are constantly shown as soon as an opportunity arises are the accumulated energy of impure, separate and limited life, colored by selfish desire.

However, disturbances of the mind could not be controlled by effort, because when we make an effort, life is no longer free. Using effort in ignorance is to use a restricted will to free a limited life, which is impossible.

But using the force of the will with full understanding is to use a “free will” to liberate a limited life, which could be easity accomplished.

Therefore, Meditation is not really an attempt to control these mind disturbances, which are only the effects of a cause, but to expose the original cause by the force of meditation, and then use the will becoming free to return to the pure essence and the harmony of the whole being, by uniting all rays of forces driving life activities, to radiate from the Central Center under the direction of True Intuition.

Man should not try to “Become”, just to “Be”. To “Be” includes everything and does not only focus on the “me”, which inevitably leads to disharmony.

When harmony pervades, when all the beats of life follow a harmonious rhythm, when all rays of force shine with everlasting brilliance, when man whole inner life is transformed into a “Pure and Absolute Will,” man realizes the identity of the Divine Force that animates him. All troubles of whatever character or form then get lost in “the Sea of the Absolute”.

When the Soul is alone with itself, only then can it find the Eternal Truth.

The Soul originates therefore from the Eternal, not the ephemeral with its deceptive appearance.

That’s why Socrates said:

“When the soul meditates by itself, it goes straight to the pure, immortal and true being, and as it feels the relationship, it is attached to it as soon as it finds the happiness to withdraw in itself. Then it rests from its errors, it no longer fluctuates, like the Eternal it is now part. “

Man thus realizes by successive acts of meditation and purification, the union of his human energy and the Divine Force which animates him, forming a New Being: The Man God. (Con Người).

The Soul reaches its State of Supra Consciousness. This Consciousness, impersonal and disinterested, illuminated by the Light of Reality, is called Intuition.

Intuition is therefore the highest point of Intelligence, the Pure Self realized in man.

So to know Truth is to know oneself. To reach Truth is to reach the “Holy Center of Self”, where “Absolute Peace and Absolute Knowledge” reside.

Henceforth man finds within a kingdom of happiness where one reaches by the evolution of thought to its highest form, by the reversal of the will towards its first purity.

In this kingdom, thought is in the state of contemplation and will in the state of ecstasy.

Since he meets his divine self, man no longer knows loneliness. The kingdom of happiness is within him, he escapes the hold of time and space that isolates him.

From slavery, he passes to freedom and deliverance. Thus, what characterizes all liberated life is the absolute determination to be free. The door of the interior life never opens from without, always from within.

To express it more clearly: “Know thyself “, then “Free yourself.”

That every day leads us to a higher degree of self awareness; that every day sees us doing the “Renewal of our Life”.

« Ðạo càng học càng ngày càng mới,

                             Ngày mới rồi ngày mới một ngày;

Mới rồi dạy kẻ mới hay,

Hoàn toàn Ðạo Dụng mổi ngày mới thêm.

Trọn lành mà được cẩn nghiêm,

Cao kiên hữu tướng hốt chiêm vô hình. » (196)

Lại có câu :

« Việc tu hành mối manh đả chỉ,

                             Con ráng tìm Chơn Lý mà phăng;

Sao cho nhứt nhựt mổi tân,

Nhựt tân nhứt nhựt tự tân cho mình.

Khuyên con gìn dạ sắc đinh,

Chánh tà chơn ngụy phải minh cho rành. » (259)

Knowing that we are all One, that everything is in the Whole, that the most humble fragment contains the Absolute is a magnificent Truth that transforms the entire universe, people and things.

« Thầy nhìn con, cả gái trai,

Côn trùng, điểu thú, căn cai cũng nhìn »

It is only by realizing the inherent Divinity in man that we can grasp the depth of his misery, the state of his spiritual enslavement and his privation of divine perfection and bliss.

Then, we would be able to understand the deep words of Christ: “Be perfect as Our Heavenly Father is perfect”.

It is the painful feeling of the contrast between the Divinity in Man and the present ignorance, with all resulting sufferings, that spurs the willingness to serve man.

Without this realization of the Divine Spirit in self and in others, true sympathy, true love and true rervice are impossible.

So each individu should reach, not to the totality of knowledge, but to the “Totality of Being”

« Người hiệp Một, với Ta một Mối,

Ta hiệp Người, mới gọi Người Ta ;

Ta Người hiệp được mới Hòa,

Ta Người hiệp Một, nào Ba với Trời. »

To reach the Divine in self, Man must realize inner harmony; which means bring back every beat of life, spiritual life, to its first purity, thus realizing the union of his strength with the force of the Absolute. In the same way, to reach God, the Source of the Absolute, he must work for the realization of the Harmony of Universal Life in him, each in its sphere.

The divine experience thus goes from the Knowledge of the Inner Life to the Knowledge of the Unity of Life, the Essential Unity of all things.

This is done by the transformation of Desire into Pure Will and Pure Will into True Love; because if Knowledge and Will are two grandiose manifestations of Life, True Love is Life universal and sublime expression.

The study of the soul by the Soul, of intelligence by Intelligence, is therefore intended to awaken the vast Creative Force that is latent in every individual, and to give it the greatest possible extension.

It is the fastest, most rational and universal way to arrive to God who is “All”.

Now that we have opened the door to our inner Life, that we have released the vital essence of our Being, let us try, with new eyes, to embrace the Infinite in its Universal Essence so that we could determine the place of man in the universe.
